Milko & The Cubalkanics,
Cigarros Explosivos!
Es gibt einen Ort, wo sich Cumbia, die Klänge Kubas
und Balkan-Musik in den Armen liegen - und der liegt
auf dem mitreißendem Debüt-Album von Jaro Milko
& The Cubalkanics. Surf-Gitarre, kubanischer Son
und druckvoller Gypsy Brass tanzen auf „Cigarros
Explosivos!“ ausgelassen Seite an Seite.
Jaro Milko trommelte seine Band The Cubalkanics
erst vor vier Jahren zusammen. "Ich wusste genau,
dass ich eine Band mit einem ganz eigenen Sound
wollte – wir haben z.B. keinen Bassisten." Aber mit
Posaunist Lukas Briggen ist eine Geheimwaffe mit
von der Partie. "Lukas spielt eigentlich viele der
Basslines. Er hat für seine Posaune ein Pedal, das
senkt die Töne um eine Oktave." Mit beherztem Griff
in die tiefsten Register erledigt Eric Gilson an der
Orgel dann den Rest.
The Cubalkanics ließen unmittelbar nach Gründung
keine Gelegenheit aus, bei Live-Auftritten am eigenen
Sound zu feilen. Für die gewissenhafte Arbeit im
Studio nahm sich die Band dann viel Zeit. ¡Y aquí
tienes! „Cigarros Explosivos!“ flirtet mit Ska und
durchquert im Tanzzug Lateinamerika. Viele der
Melodien und Texte sind eine ganz persönliche
Hommage Milkos an Kuba.
“Der Song “Cumbia Nr. 5" erzählt vom Einschlafen in
Kuba," erklärt Milko, "während "Music, Rum and
Cha-Cha-Cha“ vom Flair der legendären Casa de la
Trova in Santiago de Cuba inspiriert ist.“
In der jetzigen Form gibt es The Cubalkanics erst seit
2010, aber eigentlich hat das Projekt eine viel längere
Geschichte. Milko wurde nach der Ausreise seiner
Eltern aus der Tschechoslowakei in der Schweiz
geboren. Als Kind lernte er klassische Gitarre, kaufte
sich alsbald seine erste E-Gitarre und fand über Punk
und Rock, Jazz und Avantgarde zur Balkanmusik. Als
Gitarrist bei Prekmurski Kavbojci eiferte er Django
Reinhardt nach und spielte vor allem Gypsy Swing.
Während einer längeren Reise mit seiner Freundin
durch Kuba wurde seine Liebe zur kubanischen
Musik geweckt. "Ich stolperte auf Kuba über so viel
Vertrautes, z.B. Möbel und Gläser wie die meiner
Eltern aus den 70er Jahren. Alles kam mir da
eigenartig vertraut und doch so anders vor."
Im Jahr 2008 tourte Milko als neues Mitglied von
Firewater, der Band von ex- CopShootCop Sänger und
Bassist Tod A, durch die USA. „Jemand in den USA
drückte uns eine Cumbia Compilation in die Hand,
wir waren verrückt danach und die Platte lief
pausenlos.“
Im markanten Sound von The Cubalkanics fließen all
diese Erfahrungen und Milkos unterschiedlichsten
Vorlieben mit ein. "Alle Lieder und Texte auf
„Cigarros Explosivos!“ sind von mir. Es ist die
emotionalste und persönlichste Musik, die ich je
gemacht habe ."
Aber auch ohne das Können von Ines Brodbeck und
Eric Gut (Schlagzeug / Perkussion) wäre das Album
„Cigarros Explosivos!“ nicht realisierbar gewesen.

Gitarren und einer wildgewordenen Orgel
aufnehmen...“
