- Description
"Stone Cold" is a deep immersion into the wild, unforgiving expanses of the American Far West, inspired by
the harsh winters of Montana. This second track, from Mount Kōya's upcoming concept album "Teien",
evokes frozen, desolate landscapes where nature reigns supreme. Throughout the album, various sonic
landscapes explore different types of gardens, real or imagined. With "Stone Cold", it’s the harsh and hostile
garden of the wild, endless winter that asserts itself upon the listener, as towering mountains stretch infinitely,
frozen in cold silence.
This song captures the essence of vast frozen spaces, reflecting the hardship of life in this wintery Far West.
It conveys an existential journey, where every step through deep snow leads towards an endless horizon.
The listener is immersed in this white, frozen world, an arctic desert of the Far West where time seems
suspended and the echoes of pioneers and trappers fade beneath the snow. The lyrics take the listener on a
solitary journey through a ghost town, where the old windmill still turns amidst icy winds and snowy mountains.
"In the desert, stone cold" becomes the refrain for a land abandoned by humanity, where only the wind, snow,
and memories of a bygone era remain.
This single, composed between 2022 and 2023, was recorded at the band’s studio in Vevey in the fall of 2023
under the direction of Aria J. Comfort, and later mastered by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording in
Bloomington, Indiana.
Musically, Mount Kōya draws inspiration from the psychedelic sounds of the 60s and 70s, hypnotic krautrock,
and modern indie rock. In this track, the deliberately steady and relentless rhythm section evokes the
unyielding cold of these frozen expanses. Organs and synths envelop the melody in haunting textures,
reminiscent of the winds sweeping across icy plains, while the piercing guitars culminate in an energetic solo,
amplifying the dramatic intensity of this solitary quest.
"Stone Cold" is an invitation to journey through the vast wintery wilderness of the Far West, to feel the
immense frozen expanses, and to confront the brutal forces of nature. This song is a true musical odyssey,
where Mount Kōya’s sonic landscapes merge with the legends and memory of a past frozen in time. - Album Teien
